Mental illness refers to various disorders that affect a person’s mood and behavior. Today, there are more than 200 known mental disorders. While these disorders vary in terms of severity, there are several that impact a large portion of the United States. Here are 5 Common Mental Illnesses:

5 Common Mental Illnesses- #1- ANXIETY DISORDER

Anxiety disorders are the single most common mental illness in the United States. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), roughly 40 million Americans over the age of 18 are affected by an anxiety disorder, accounting for 18% of the total population. While anxiety is highly treatable, only one-third of those living with the disorder seek treatment.

5 Common Mental Illnesses- #2- DEPRESSION

Depression is a brain disorder that affects an individual’s mood in a negative way. Common symptoms of depression include a pessimistic outlook on life and feelings of loneliness. Additionally, individuals suffering from depression often experience a loss of energy and motivation to engage in activities they once enjoyed. While depression is considered a mental illness, it can also negatively impact a person’s physical health. Roughly 6.7% of American adults are affected by a major depressive disorder.

5 Common Mental Illnesses- #3- AUTISM

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or more simply referred to as Autism, is a complex brain disorder that affects 3 million people in the United States. The disorder manifests itself in individuals at a very young age, with doctors often able to make a definitive diagnosis around 2 and 3 years old. The most common characteristics of autism include impaired communication and social interaction, however the severity of these symptoms differs greatly in patients.

5 Common Mental Illnesses- #4- DEMENTIA/ALZHEIMER’S

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a group of cognitive disorders, the most common being Alzheimer’s disease. The most common characteristic of dementia and Alzheimer’s is memory loss. Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease, in which a person’s memory worsens as the disease progresses. As of 2016, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that over 5 million Americans suffer from the disease. The Alzheimer’s Association provides free information about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder that most commonly affects children and adolescence. However, ADHD may also affect a person in adulthood. Those living with ADHD often display a pattern of inattention, in which they have trouble sustaining focus. Additionally, these individuals often have trouble sitting still and are often disorganized. The most common treatment for ADHD is medication, however behavioral therapy has also proven to help patients.
