American Diabetes Month: Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases, which are characterized by the body’s inability to produce insulin properly. With roughly 29 million Americans living with the disease, the diabetes is currently the 7th leading cause of death.
This November is American Diabetes Month, an annual campaign sponsored by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). This year’s theme, This Is Diabetes, will showcase the stories of those affected by the disease.
There are two principal forms of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Genetics are believed to play a role in the development of type 1 diabetes, making it more difficult to prevent. Type 2 diabetes, however, is largely preventable and can be avoided by making healthy lifestyle choices.

Obesity greatly increased the risk of type 2 diabetes. Regular physical activity can help you shed extra weight and lower your blood sugar. While any exercise is helpful in managing your weight, aerobic exercises and resistance training are especially helpful in getting your diabetes under control.
American Diabetes Month- Prevention Tip #2: Eat Fiber
Foods rich in fiber include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fiber also helps you feel full, which can prevent overeating. The benefits of healthy eating go beyond diabetes prevention, as it can boost your mood, increase energy, and regulate cholesterol and blood pressure.
American Diabetes Month- Prevention Tip #3: Have a Drink
Moderate amount of alcohol may help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. Research shows that alcohol can increase the efficiency of insulin production. However, you should not use this as an excuse to drink regularly. Doctors recommend that men have no more than two alcoholic beverages a day, and only one drink for women. Be sure to limit your alcohol consumption as high amounts of alcohol actually increase the risk of diabetes.
