Avoiding Summertime Anxiety and Depression

Summer is supposed to be the time when we can sit in the sun and relax without any worries. If you suffer from anxiety or depression this may not be the case, there are many factors that can contribute to anxiety and depression in the summer. Here we have listed some ways you can avoid some stresses and have a relaxing summer!

Schools out for the summer and if you have young kids you may be overwhelmed with suddenly having your days be filled with planning ways to constantly entertain them. If you suffer from anxiety the thought of a new routine may be very overwhelming to you.

Summer Solution: Try to map our your summer so that you have plenty of quiet time built in, leave time to wind down every night and limit caffeine, electronics, and distractions. Also try sharing childcare or chauffeuring responsibilities with other parents so you can get your stress relieving ‘me’ time to relax.


Lack of Sleep

Longer days means more sunlight and while that vitamin D helps you absorb calcium and promotes bone growth it can also mean you are getting up earlier and staying up later- a recipe for sleep deprivation.

Summer Solution: Try to keep normal sleep hours during the summer, even if it means using heavy curtains to block out light. When you do get up eat outside or in bright light to get a boost of sunlight to start your day.

Body Image Issues

As the temperature rises and the layers of clothing seem to disappear many people start to feel self-conscious about their bodies. Since so many summertime gatherings revolve around beaches and pools, you may feel like you want to start avoiding social situations out of feeling insecure.

water-fight-442257_640Summer Solution: the media portrays an unrealistic expectation of how people are ‘supposed’ to look in the summertime. Instead of feeling ashamed of yourself try being the best, healthiest, happiest version of yourself.

Financial Worries

Summers can be expensive from vacations, to summer camps, or babysitters to keep your kids occupied while you're at work. With all of these expenses adding up you’re bound to feel stressed about your finances.

Summer Solution: Choose the summer events and activities that are really meaningful and important to you. Cost cutting measures like staycations and exploring your own hometown can turn out to be a whole lot of fun for not a lot of money.
