Bladder Health Awareness Month: Many of us take our bladders for granted. We don’t think twice about using the bathroom or the function that our bladder carries out during the process. Bladder health is very important and is impacted by many lifestyle and environmental factors.
November is Bladder Health Month and the Urology Care Foundation is taking action by informing the public about common bladder health problems. To commemorate this annual event, here are four ways to keep your bladder healthy:
Bladder Health Awareness Month- Tip #1: Drink Water
Everyone should aim to drink six to eight glasses of water each day. Water can help flush out bacteria and prevent bladder infection. However, make sure not to drink too much as it cause you to make frequent trips to the bathroom throughout the day. Also, limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol, as they can irritate your bladder.
Bladder Health Awareness Month- Tip #2: Fruit
Fruit, specifically cranberry juice, contains ingredients that can help remove harmful bacteria from the walls of your urinary track. Altogether, the fruit juice can be used as a preventative for bladder infection.
Bladder Health Awareness Month- Tip #3: Take a Walk
Those who are sedentary or seldom walk will experience fluid build-up in their legs. As a result, people will wake frequently throughout the night having to urinate. Walking around throughout the day can help prevent this buildup and also promote good physical health. If you are unable to walk, consider stretching and raising your legs to waist level.
Bladder Health Awareness Month- Tip #4: Avoid Tobacco
It’s no mystery that smoking causes health problems. However, most don’t like smoking to their bladder. Roughly 50,000 people are diagnosed with bladder cancer every year. Smokers are two to three times more likely to develop bladder cancer than those who do not smoke. Similarly, other tobacco products can lead to bladder complications, so it is best to stay away from tobacco products altogether.
