The brain is arguably the most important organ of the body. The brain controls every aspect of the body, and its health is imperative to maintaining a healthy self. There are some brain foods that will help not only improve the brain long term, but help you become sharper at work or in everyday life. These brain foods make you more healthy in general—but will especially give your brain an awesome boost.
Superfood #1: Salmon
Salmon is a popular and tasty fish that has been found to be extremely healthy for your brain--an ideal brain food! Salmon has a large amount of omega-3 fatty acids which are essential to brain functioning. Salmon is thought to be useful in transmitting signals between cells, also improving function. Essential fatty acids found in salmon cannot be made by the body, and must be generated by your diet. Thus, salmon can give your body these needed fatty acids. Omega-3s also have anti-inflammatory substances that are overall good for the body. Nutritionists recommend that you should eat salmon two to three times per week.
Superfood #2: Avocado
Avocados contain monounsaturated fats that benefit brain functioning. These monounsaturated fats lower blood pressure, which allows for increased blood flow into the brain. Increased blood flow means a more healthy and active brain. However avocados are high in calories, so try to limit it to maybe half an avocado on a salad. Avocados are also full of healthy vitamin E.
Superfood #3: Blueberries
This yummy fruit is an excellent choice to put on yogurt or snack on in-between meals. Blueberries help to protect the brain from oxidative stress, which causes cell damage. Blueberries are also theorized to improve learning capacity and build positive connections between cells. It is recommended to try and eat around 1 cup of blueberries every few days.
Superfood #4: Nuts
Nuts are a great source of unsaturated fats and vitamin E. Both of these benefits lead to better brain functioning and to help in the prevention of cognitive decline. Vitamin E protects membranes from oxidation, and defends damage caused by free radicals.
Superfood #5: Dark chocolate
Now here is the best brain food yet--chocolate. Eating small amounts of dark chocolate has been hypothesized to help brain function. Dark chocolate contains antioxidant properties that enhance focus and concentration. Also, not surprisingly, it produces endorphins to improve mood. But, just try to have a bite or two a day.
