Cancer Prevention- Cancer is a group of diseases that causes abnormal cell growth, which attacks various parts of the body. There are more than 100 types of cancer, however the more common types include breast, lung, colon, skin and prostate.

The statistics associated with cancer are staggering. According to a recent article published by the American Cancer Society, roughly 1,685,210 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2016. Cancer is also the second leading cause of death, behind heart disease.

Cancer is caused by both internal and external factors. Internal factors include genetic mutation and hormones, while external factors include tobacco use and poor diet.

While not all cancer is preventable, there are a handful of lifestyle choices that can help lower the risk of developing cancer. Here are five ways to prevent cancer:

Cancer Prevention- Lifestyle Choice #1: Stop Smoking

The health effects associated with smoking are extremely negative and harm nearly every organ in the body. Chewing tobacco and secondhand smoke are also known to cause cancer, so it is best to stay away from tobacco products altogether.

 

Cancer Prevention- Lifestyle Choice #2: Control Your Weight

Being overweight or obese significantly increases your risk of developing cancer. To manage your weight, it is recommended you adopt healthy eating habits. Avoid food high in sugar and fat and choose a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Counting calories can also help you avoid overeating.

 

Cancer Prevention- Lifestyle Choice #3: Exercise

It is recommended that adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity every week. Children should get at least 1 hour of moderate or vigorous intensity every day. The health benefits of exercise are extensive and can help prevent a number of health problems. Exercise can also help to manage your weight.

 

Cancer Prevention- Lifestyle Choice #4: Eat Healthy

Try to eat at least 2 ½ cups of vegetables and fruit every day. Choose whole-grain bread over white bread and avoid any processed grains. Also, limit your intake of red meat and processed meats, such as bacon and hot dogs. Instead, eat fish and/or chicken, as they are healthier sources of protein. A healthy diet can help you control your weight while reducing the risk of cancer.

 

Cancer Prevention- Lifestyle Choice #5: Avoid Alcohol

While it can certainly be relaxing to unwind after work with a few drinks, all persons should limit their alcohol intake. It is recommended that men have no more than 2 alcohol beverages a day, and women should have no more than 1 drink per day.
