Cardiovascular heart disease is the umbrella under which numerous heart problems lay. Most heart problems are directly related to plaque buildup in the heart, a process called atherosclerosis, among other things. Multiple ailments stem from this plaque buildup because it directly affects the flow of blood to the heart. As a result, the heart is susceptible to disorders involving the blood vessels, which can cause heart attack and stroke. As you may have read before, cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death worldwide. That is why it is so important to be very conscious of your diet and exercise to keep your heart healthy and strong.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most common heart disease is coronary artery disease, a condition that can lead to a heart attack. Heart attacks occur when there the blood flow to the heart becomes blocked by a clot, causing the destruction of an artery. Though many people survive their first heart attack it is definitely a warning sign that some changes, either dietary or physical, need to take place.

There are other forms of heart disease that are not directly affected by buildup, but are just as serious and must be treated immediately after discovered. Contrary to what many assume, heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure, does not mean the heart stops beating. The heart is merely functioning poorly, affecting the flow of oxygen-rich blood required throughout the entire body. If not treated, this ailment can be fatal. There is also a disease that affects the rhythm of the heart called Arrhythmia. Arrhythmia happens when the heart rate is either too fast or too slow or beats irregularly. Then there are heart valve problems spanning all issues pertaining to the valves.

Heart disease has been a serious issue for many years and though research is being done to move towards more successful treatments of these various diseases of the heart, it is a long, fatal fight. Ways to avoid heart disease are maintaining a balanced diet, exercise and managing your bad cholesterol levels either with a hearty diet or taking statins.
