Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) - 5 Common Symptoms: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic allergic/immune condition where a person will have inflammation of the esophagus. A buildup of white blood cells, called eosinophils, found in the tissue of the esophagus are a reaction to foods, allergens or acid reflux, which can inflame or injure the esophageal tissue. This can then lead to the following symptoms:

Abdominal and chest pains are common in patients with EoE. Some chest pains can mimic the sensation of heartburn. It is not clear how EoE causes these symptoms.

Difficulty swallowing is the most common symptom of EoE. Swallowing food is usually painful and hurts. It may also cause discomfort and force the patient to regurgitate.

Food impactions occur when food gets lodged in the esophagus and the impacted solid food cannot be swallowed because of the obstruction in the esophagus. Individuals with impacted food are unable to eat or drink and food cannot pass into the stomach.

Patients often see no response to medications, such as acid suppressors or Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) medications.

Patients experience difficulty sleeping due to chest or abdominal pains, reflux, and/or nausea that is often centrally located and does not respond to antacids.
