Health Benefits of Laughter

Posted on Jul 24, 2015 3:00:55 PM by healtheo360

It’s a common saying that "laughter is the best medicine" but does it actually have any real health benefits? More research is coming out that proves that laughter actually induces physical changes in your body in both short term and long term and can have a great impact on a person’s mental health.

Short-term benefits

  • Stimulate organs. Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.
  • Activate and relieve stress. A good laugh fires up and then cools down your stress response and increases your heart rate and blood pressure, which results in a good relaxed feeling.
  • Soothe stiffness. Laughter can stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress.

Long-term benefits

  • Improve your immune system. Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. Positive thoughts release neuron signals throughout your body that help fight stress and potentially more serious illnesses.
  • Improve your mood. Many people experience depression due to a variety of factors. Laughter can help lessen your depression and anxiety and make you feel happier.

Make it a habit to spend time with friends who make you laugh, one of the most important ways you can get and keep positive energy in your life is with the company you keep.

If you haven’t laughed yet today here’s a video that will at the very least make you smile.
