Home Remedies for Soothing a Sunburn

Nothing can quite ruin a great day of lying out by the pool or the beach than coming inside only to realize it’s too late, you’re as red as a lobster and everything hurts. At this point sunscreen can’t help you but these home remedies might ease the pain.

Cool down

Minimize pain by taking a cool bath or putting a cool, wet cloth on the affected area several times a day. Make sure the water isn’t too cold and avoid applying direct ice to your sunburn which can cause an ice burn-something you definitely don’t want on top of your already painful sunburn.

Hydrate!

Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day (something you should already be doing) to replace fluid loss and to prevent dehydration and dizziness. Try to avoid drinks that can dehydrate you even more like soda, coffee, and alcoholic beverages.

Apply moisturizer

Moisturizer helps trap moisture under your skin allowing it to rehydrate. Try using a moisturizer containing aloe vera or soy to help soothe the sting of your sunburn. Avoid using moisturizers with petroleum which will trap the heat in your skin.

Don’t pick!

If your skin forms blisters resist the urge to pop them, that will only make the sunburn worse. Blistering skin means that you have a second-degree sunburn. Allow the blister to act as a natural band aid and heal the skin and pop on their own.

Although sunburns only cause temporary discomfort it is a result of skin receiving too much exposure from the suns ultraviolet (UV) rays and can cause long-lasting damage to the skin. This damage increases a person’s risk for getting skin cancer, making it critical to protect the skin from the sun.
