Eating Healthy while Eating Out

Posted on Jul 31, 2015 11:26:50 AM by healtheo360

As the number of affordable restaurants in the United States continues to grow dining out has become an easily accessible option for meals. These dining establishments can be ticking time bombs when it comes to nutritional health. Government surveys find that the food you typically eat when you’re not home is nutritionally worse in every way than the food you eat at home.

You can rely on these following tips to help making eating out a healthier treat.

  1. Plan Ahead.

Lookup the menu online and decide what healthy meal you are going to order before you arrive at the restaurant. This way when you arrive you wont be rushed into making an unhealthy decision.

  1. Ask for it your Way.

If an item is fried, ask for it grilled. If it comes with french fries, ask for a side of veggies instead. Ask for a smaller portion of the meat and a larger portion of the salad. Very often, the restaurant will cooperate with these substitutions.

  1. Box up your Entrée.

As you are ordering ask the waiter to box half of your entrée before it ever gets to the table. Restaurants tend to give out larger than recommended portion size, by boxing up your meal to start you will be less inclined to overeat and will have leftovers for the next day!

  1. Know Red Flag words.

Any menu description that uses the words creamy, breaded, crisp, sauced, or stuffed is likely loaded with hidden fats. Your best bet for a healthier option is ordering something that is described with words like baked, fresh, steamed, or seasoned.

  1. Drink Water.

Drinking water throughout your meal will slow you down, help you enjoy the food more, and let the message get to your brain that you’re full—before your plate is empty.
