Immune System Boost: This year, winter officially begins Wednesday, December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere. However, the characteristic traits of winter are already here. Don’t get me wrong; the first snowfall of winter is a beautiful sight. However, it doesn’t take long for that snow to turn into a grey, paste-like sludge that makes your morning commutes wet and miserable.

Aside from the annoying obstacles caused by snow, the short days and cold nights of winter can negatively impact your health both physically and emotionally. Our bodies are especially susceptible to infection during the cold months of winter, and our immune system struggles to fight off harmful pathogens. However, while summer may feel like a lifetime away, there are simple things you can do to stay healthy in the cold months ahead. Here are three ways to boost your immune system:

Immune System Boost- Tip #1: Eat Healthy

While you can’t control the weather, you can control your diet. Vitamins A, C, D, and E, Omega 3s and minerals selenium and zinc can help support your immune system. Avoid processed meats, soft drinks, and fried foods, as these can suppress your immune system. Instead, aim to eat healthy animal protein, whole grains, nuts, fruits, and vegetables.


Immune System Boost- Tip #2: Catch Some Z’s

Studies show that there is a strong connection between a person’s sleep-wake schedule and their immune system function. Those who do not get enough sleep are more likely to get sick, as their bodies have difficulty fighting off infection. Aim to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. If you need, take a nap in the afternoon to catch up on missed sleep. Your body and immune system will thank you.


Immune System Boost- Tip #3: Drink Water

Dehydration can cause a number of health problems, including dizziness, fatigue and confusion. Luckily, the cure to dehydration is simple: drink water. Doctors recommend everyone drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. Water also helps produce lymph, which carries immune system cells. Consider adding a slice of lemon to your next glass of water, as it contains immune boosting vitamin C.
