March is National Kidney Month and everyday 1 in 3 American adults are currently at risk for developing kidney disease. Your kidneys play a major role in your body by removing toxic substances and excess water from the bloodstream. Kidney Health Tip #1: Drink Water

Drinking water is extremely important for your kidneys. To maintain a good health for your kidneys and body, it is suggested that you should consume a daily amount of 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day. Drinking the suggested amount of water will help to clear sodium, urea, and other toxins from your body.

 

Kidney Health Tip #2: No Smoking/ No Alcohol

Smoking increases the chances of you developing kidney cancer about 50 percent. If you’re a smoker this is the best time to stop. Smoking also slows down the flow of blood to your kidneys, which stops the kidney to function normally. Drinking large amounts of alcohol can cause your blood pressure to rise. Limiting your alcohol intake per day will help you to keep a healthy blood pressure.

 

Kidney Health Tip #3: Stay Active

Staying active is a great way to keep your kidney and body in great shape. Staying active also helps to reduce your blood pressure,as well as reducing your risk of developing kidney disease.

 

Kidney Health Tip #4: Don’t overuse over-the-counter pills

Common over-the-counter drugs for example non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can cause some damage to your kidneys if taken regularly. Be mindful on taking these medications and do not take them excessively, only use these over-the-counter pills for emergency purposes.

 

Kidney Health Tip #5: Eat Healthy and Check Your Weight Regularly

Making healthy eating choices will help your overall health. Reducing your salt intake is one way to making a healthy eating choice. It is recommended to intake 5-6 grams of salt per day. Limit the amount of processed foods and restaurant foods that you eat on a daily basis. Being obese or overweight can lead to health conditions such as diabetes, which can then lead to kidney disease. Check your weight regularly, and discuss with your doctor the necessary actions you will need to take if you're obese or overweight.

 

Kidney Health Tip #6: Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol

Monitoring your blood pressure and cholesterol is extremely important as well. High blood pressure is a common cause of kidney disease. Having high cholesterol puts you more at risk for kidney disease especially if you're diabetic. Visit your doctor and consult with him/her concerning changes that you should make in your daily diet and activities if you are experiencing high cholesterol.

 

Kidney Health Tip #7: Regular Appointments

Getting regular appointments to know your overall health is highly recommend especially if you’re at risk for developing kidney disease or kidney cancer. Having diabetes, hypertension, or being obese are some of the high risk factors to having kidney disease.

Knowing your family’s medical history will give you a better understanding of what to except for your health and how you can change those factors.
