Male & Female Breast Cancer: 3 Differences

Posted on Oct 20, 2016, 5:11:33 PM by healtheo360

Male & Female Breast Cancer: Breast cancer is rare among men, accounting for just 1 percent of all cases. Women on the other hand are greatly affected by the disease, with 1 in 8 women developing breast cancer during their lifetime. However, research shows that men affected by the disease have a lower survival rate than women.

Since breast cancer is so rare in men, there is little understanding of how it compares to in women. However, recent studies have found several key difference in comparing men and women. Here are three differences in men and women living with breast cancer:

male and female breast cancer

Male & Female Breast Cancer - Difference #1: Diagnosis

Breast cancer tends to be more aggressive in men than women when a patient is first diagnosed. In men, breast cancers were larger in size, spread to lymph nodes, and more aggressive overall. This may be attributed the fact that men do not get tested as often as women, and therefore allow the disease to manifest itself for a longer period of time.

Male & Female Breast Cancer - Difference #2: Treatment

Since breast cancer is very rare among men, most treatment methods are based on the same treatments used for women. Evidence does suggest that men are more likely to be hormone-receptor-positive during treatment. Unfortunately, men are also less likely to receive hormonal therapy during their treatment.

Male & Female Breast Cancer - Difference #3: Genetic

There are many genetic biological differences in men and women. This often causes cancer to develop and grow at differing rates. As mentioned above, breast cancer tends to spread to surrounding lymph nodes more aggressively in men, a cause most likely attributed to the genetic makeup of men versus women.
