National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month: This November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, an annual campaign designed to raise awareness about the disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by memory loss. With roughly 5.1 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, it is currently the most common form of dementia.

The symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s are progressive and get worse with time. Common symptoms include memory loss, mood swings, social withdraw, and depression.

While there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease, there are precautionary measures that can offset the disease. Here are three ways to prevent Alzheimer’s:

National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month - Prevention Tip #1: Fruits and Veggies

Studies suggest that the consumption of fruits and vegetables can significantly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Berries contain anthocyanosides, a compound that fights memory impairment.


National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month - Prevention Tip #2: Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Salmon, mackerel, and tuna all contain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid that can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. Fatty fish or fish oil supplements lower the risk of developing the neurodegenerative disorder and may help depression, weight loss, and cholesterol levels.


Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month - Prevention Tip #3: Wine and Juice

Red wine and grape juice can help protect brain cells from oxidative stress and beta amyloid. Have a glass of the grape-based drink with your evening meal to combat the effects of Alzheimer’s. Red wine can also help lower your cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease.
