National Physical Therapy Month: This October the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is celebrating National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM), an annual celebration that recognizes the health benefits of physical therapy.

First established in 1992, NPTM promotes the healing powers of physical therapy, This year, the campaign is asking people everywhere to #ChoosePT, while also encouraging patients to replace opioid use with physical therapy.

Physical therapy can help people bounce back from a serious medical condition, illness, and injuries. Here are five benefits of physical therapy:

National Physical Therapy Month - PT Benefit #1: Eliminate Pain

It is important to talk with your primary care physician to develop a physical therapy program tailored to your needs. Physical therapy can help to reduce or eliminate pain altogether, a more conservative approach than pain medication.

National Physical Therapy Month - PT Benefit #2: Improve Mobility

Patients who have difficulty walking, standing, or moving altogether can benefit greatly from physical therapy. Therapeutic exercises may also eliminate the need for a cane or assistive walking device.

National Physical Therapy Month - PT Benefit #3: Stroke Recovery

A stroke can leave a person partially paralyzed and/or immobile. However, a strict physical therapy regimen can help restore mobility in a patient and help them regain most, if not all, of their physical strength.

National Physical Therapy Month- PT Benefit #4: Sports Recovery

Athletes are prone to injuries, as their professions are physically demanding. While pain medication may provide immediate relief, physical therapy can help restore your long-term physical health and prevent future injuries.

National Physical Therapy Month- PT Benefit #5: Avoid Surgery

In some cases, physical therapy can replace the need for surgery. Even if there is still need for surgery, physical therapy and give you the physical strength to endure.
