Osteoporosis Overview: Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that causes them to weaken and become fragile - increasing the likelihood of a fracture. It is sometimes referred to as a "invisible disability" because it can exist for years without symptoms. There is no cure for osteoporosis, though there are many treatment options. Check out this infographic to learn more about osteoporosis, including risk factors, lifestyle changes, and some important statistics:

Osteoporosis Overview - Symptoms

As bones begin to lose integrity and strength, one may experience signs and symptoms such as:

  • Back pain, caused by fractured or collapsed vertebra
  • Loss of 1 to 2 inches of height
  • Stooped posture
  • Bone break or fracture
  • Curving of the upper back (Dowager's hump)
  • Bone tenderness

Osteoporosis Overview - Diagnosis

The most common test for diagnosing osteoporosis is called the DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) scan. This scan measures the levels of calcium in the bones, typically at the hip or upper spine. A DEXA scan is recommended for all at risk individuals, and should be performed every 2 years. Your T-score will determine whether your diagnosis is normal, osteopenia (pre-osteoporosis), osteoporosis, or severe osteoporosis. T-scores range from +1 to -2.5 and lower.

Osteoporosis Overview - Risk Factors

  • Age (over 45)
  • Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis (especially post-menopausal women)
  • Inactive lifestyle
  • Family history, genetics

  • Take vitamin D and/or calcium supplements as necessary

Osteoporosis Overview - Prevalence

  • Worldwide, osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures every year
  • Someone experiences an osteoporotic fracture every 3 seconds
  • Worldwide, an estimated 200 million women are affected by osteoporosis
  • 1 in 3 women over age 50 will experience an osteoporotic fracture
