Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month: This October is Planetree’s 10th annual Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month (PCCAM), a campaign that celebrates the advancement of patient-centered care.

This year’s theme, The World of Patient and Family Engagement: Tools for Transformation, is centered on strengthening relations between all parties interested in improving our nation’s healthcare system. Planetree is offering a free online toolkit giving all healthcare stakeholders the necessary tools to help advance patient-centered care.

To get the most out of your medical experience, Planetree is encouraging everyone to be an #EngagedPatient. Here are four ways to be an #EngagedPatient:

Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month- #EngagedPatient Tip #1: Ask Questions

Always be sure to ask your doctor plenty of questions. Medical jargon can often be confusing and people often say they understand something when they do not. Always ask your doctor to see your medical record and ask questions until you fully understand.

Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month- #EngagedPatient Tip #2: Get A Second Opinion

It is always a good idea to get a second opinion from another doctor. According to the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA), 10 to 20 percent of all medical cases and misdiagnosed. If you are skeptical about a recent diagnosis, reach out to a specialist so you can make sure you are receiving the proper treatment.

Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month- #EngagedPatient Tip #3: “Break Up” with Your Doctor

If you feel that you are not receiving the proper treatment from your doctor, “break up” with him or her. Your health is extremely important and if you feel your needs are not being met it is best to look for another doctor.

Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month- #EngagedPatient Tip #4: Know the Cost

Always know the cost of your medical bills. Hospital stays can often be pricey. It’s best to always ask your doctor the cost of something before you agree to a treatment. Also, if you have health insurance, speak with a representative so you know what medical treatment is covered by your plan.
