Thinking about taking swimming lessons as an adult? Or looking into lessons for your child? Swimming is a very beneficial skill to have. It’s fun, great exercise and can save your life. Here are 4 reasons you need to learn to swim this summer!

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for people under the age of 14. An estimated 37% of adults do not know how to swim according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Don’t let these statistics scare you from getting into the water. With a few lessons, you will be able to enjoy the water this summer just like everyone else.


1. Personal safety is one of the biggest reasons you need to learn to swim. At some point in your life, you will surely find yourself near water whether that be on a boat, fishing on a dock, or sitting by the pool. There is no need to be afraid of the water when you get in these situations. By learning to swim, you will have a better time and feel safer near water.

2. If you know how to swim, you may be able to help others. Being able to swim is important if you are a parent or child care giver. When around children in the pool, its great to be able to swim if they ever need help.

3. Swimming is a great form of exercise. When swimming you use many different muscles in your body. It is good for building strength and endurance as well as being beneficial to your metabolism and cardiovascular system. The water makes exercise less strenuous on your body.

4. Swimming is a social activity! Hanging out by the pool or lake is a good way to be social with friends and family. Water sports are fun watch, participate in and talk about with friends. Enjoy the summer sun by the water!

If your feeling nervous about learning to swim, take it slow at first! Start by getting your feet in and gradually move to deeper water. Hold on to the side whenever necessary and do what makes you comfortable. Swimming can be a lot of fun once you get the hang of it!
