Reducing Fatigue: Do the winter months leave you feeling more tired than usual? Do you wake up feeling groggy and hesitant to start your day? Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is brought on by the short, cold months of fall and winter, can cause fatigue.

Fatigue is characterized by extreme tiredness. While it is a common symptom of SAD, fatigue can be brought on by a handful of lifestyle factors as well as many medical disorders.

Diet, exercise, sleep hygiene, and alcohol and drug abuse all affect our emotional and physical wellbeing. While fatigue is sometimes unavoidable, making healthy choices can greatly lower your risk of lethargy.

Reducing Fatigue- Tip #1: Sleep Hygiene

The amount of sleep you get each night greatly influences your mood each day. Professionals recommend adults get seven to eight hours of sleep each night, while children need roughly nine to eleven. It is also important to stick to a consistent sleep schedule, and make sure you go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time each day. Avoid taking naps after 3p.m., as this may make it more difficult to fall asleep at night. Good sleep hygiene can help lower tiredness and boost your mood.

The health benefits of exercise are far and wide. Exercise can help you control your weight, boost energy, improve mood, and combat many health disorders. Exercise can also promote good sleep hygiene, leaving you feeling well rested and ready to take on the day. Find an exercise you enjoy and make it a part of your daily routine. Consider swimming, yoga, or walking to help reduce fatigue today.


Reducing Fatigue- Tip #3: Eat Healthy

Unhealthy eating can cause obesity and leave you feeling tired and sluggish. Avoid processed foods and instead eat plenty of nutrient-rich fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. While three large meals a day was once believed to be the standard for a well balanced diet, small, frequent meals throughout the day can help prevent overeating and help you control your weight. Consider consulting a nutritionist if you are interested in developing a diet tailored to your needs.

One of the most common symptoms of depression is fatigue. However, depression does not need to control your life. Talk with your doctor about how you can combat depression, whether it is seasonal or chronic. Therapy and medication can help you manage both stress and depression, and help you be the best person you can be.
