Safe Toys and Gifts Month: With Christmastime right around the corner, people are scrambling to get gifts for their children at the last minute. Parents everywhere are waiting in line to get their kids the hottest new toy on the shelves. But do you ever stop to consider the safety of your children’s toys?

Over the years, toy safety regulations have been altered in an effort to prevent serious injury among children. While most toy-related injuries do not require medical attention, a handful of toy-related deaths have been reported in recent years.

Many toys include small pieces that may be a choking hazard for younger children. Today, most toys have labels that contain the age appropriateness. These labels should never be ignored as they can help your child avoid serious injury. Also, toys that were once deemed safe may in fact pose a serious health risk for your child.

To promote child toy safety, Team Healtheo360 is offering some tips on toy safety. Here are three tips for buying safe toys:

Safe Toys and Gifts Month- Toy Buying Tip #1: Read The Label

When purchasing a toy for a child, it is important to read all aspects of the label. Look for “ATSM” on the packaging, as this means the toy has met the American Society for Testing and Materials standards. Make sure markers and crayons are nontoxic and do not contain any hazardous chemicals.

Safe Toys and Gifts Month- Toy Buying Tip #2: Inspect the Toy

Always be sure to check the safety of a toy before purchasing it. Make sure toys do not have sharp edges and corners. Also, never buy toys smaller than a child’s mouth, as they can easily swallow these products.

Safe Toys and Gifts Month- Toy Buying Tip #3: Avoid Old Toys

Hand me downs are a great way to save a little extra cash. However, many old toys do not meet safety regulations of today. Also, secondhand toys carry a large amount of germs.
