Starting mental illness conversations can be a sensitive endeavor, especially when you are the one dealing with the illness. However, it is a good idea to inform those close to you of your mental illness, as they can provide a great support network. Here are some tips for starting a conversation about your mental illness:

Starting Mental Illness Conversations Step #1:

REACH OUT

The first step in starting the conversation is to reach out to someone close to you, such as a relative or close friend. Starting the conversation face-to-face can sometimes be too intimidating. Sending a text, email, or writing a letter is a great alternative and will allow you to let your loved ones know you would like to make time to talk.

Starting Mental Illness Conversations Step #2:

RESEARCH

It is a good idea to do some research on your mental illness. Not only will this give you a better understanding of your illness, but will also help you decide what is important to share with your loved ones. Mental Health America is a great online resource that provides information on mental illness.

Starting Mental Illness Conversations Step #3:

SHARE

When it comes time to have the conversation, be prepared to share but only what you feel comfortable sharing. Also, be ready to answer any questions the person you are talking to may have. Printing out some information or bringing a pamphlet with information about your mental illness can give your loved one a better understanding of what you are dealing with. It will also allow them to learn more on their own time.
