Diabetes has increased by 13% in NYC in the last decade and is the currently the 4th leading cause of death among New Yorkers. The impact diabetes has on our city is alarming. In an effort to spread awareness and prevent diabetes, the American Diabetes Association hosted its Diabetes Expo at the Jacob Javits Center this past Saturday, March 9th, 2013.

Healtheo360 attended the event to aid in the worthy cause, joining the approximately three thousand attendees who showed up with their families and friends. All exhibitors and experts were committed to educating the public with the latest information on preventing and managing diabetes and its deadly complications. The free expo included health screenings, cooking demonstrations, goods and services, as well as doctors teaching about diabetes and management & prevention workshops.

Dr. Ronald Tamler, Director of the Mount Sinai Diabetes Center, moderated a discussion with five panelists who were able to reverse their diabetes via exercise, diet, and weight loss surgery. One woman, who was pre-diabetic prevented the onset of diabetes by modifying her diet and creating a workout routine that was right for her. Another two panelists reversed type 2 diabetes by losing over 20% of their body weight, also through simple diet and exercise changes. After unsuccessful attempts with diet and exercise, the final two panelists underwent triple bypass surgery and within 5 days lowered their blood sugar levels, eventually eliminating diabetes. They are living proof that although affected, you can turn the clock back on diabetes

Team healtheo360 was excited to see a multitude of informative programs ongoing throughout the day. The YMCA had a pavilion with exercise demonstrations, face painting stations, and fun activities encouraging children to exercise. The Active Living stage featured Thai Chi, Yoga, Boot Camp, Gospel Aerobics and Zumba demonstrations. After workouts, there were fitness instructors providing consultations on how to get started with easy, basic exercise tips. Food Network’s Jamie and Bobby Deen showed Diabetes in a New Light with hands on cooking instructions. Free health screenings took place throughout the entire show with eye, teeth, bone density, and full body check ups.

The importance of community support and patient-to-patient exchange of knowledge were highlighted all day from the show floor to the panels. The overall message was clear; ANYONE can fight and beat diabetes! By connecting diabetics globally with a cooperative, caring and informative diabetic support group community, the healtheo360 team is doing everything we can to help diabetics take their lives back.
