Best Workout Songs to Keep You Pumped

We all know that listening to music is the best part of our workout, helping us to relax and enjoy an otherwise grueling activity. Recent research continues to show the benefits of listening to music while running or lifting (check out our recent post on how music influences workout). Exercise is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself. We’ve put together a short list of the best workout songs to give you some energy while you get your healthy on.

Enjoy!

Pop

Song: “Young Folks” by Peter Bjorn and John

Why it’s Great: Right from the beginning, the light snare comes in and sets a perfect pace for running, biking, or swimming (we do not endorse wearing headphones underwater). And then that catchy whistling starts and suddenly you realize that’s the tune everyone is humming during your morning cardio. Congratulations, now you have a new reason to smile when you pass them.

Favorite Line: “And we don't care about our own faults, Talking 'bout our own style,
All we care about is talking, Talking only me and you.”

Rock

Song: “The Final Countdown” by Europe

Why it’s Great: There are few things in this world that are greater than rock music, but I’ve heard that Swedish rock music is one of them. The best part about this song – world’s most memorable riff notwithstanding – is that you don’t even need to leave home to work out to it. Seriously, this song will give you enough energy to run around your living room six hundred times. If you do decide to hit the gym, there is no better way to countdown to that final rep or last mile. Just make sure you bring something to tie up your crazy ‘80s hair.

Favorite Line: None, just that keyboard riff, forever on repeat in my head.

Latin

Song: “La Bomba” by Ricky Martin

Why it’s Great: There was a day when Ricky Martin was good, I promise. The fusion of piano, brass, and drums that drives this song forward complements Martin’s smooth voice seamlessly. Close you eyes and imagine yourself poolside on a tropical Puerto Rican night. It’s okay if you’ve started trying to salsa dance with a five-pound dumbbell in each hand. Cardio and weightlifting at the same time? You’re awesome.

Favorite Line: “Muévete mamita que me vuelvo loco.”
Translation: “Move your body baby, how it drives me crazy.”

Hip-Hop

Song: “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio

Why it’s Great: A rap song that your father and your son can enjoy with you? I never thought I’d see it. Embrace your inner “G” and brandish those guns attached to your shoulders. After a few sets with this Stevie Wonder-sampled ‘90s hip-hop anthem washing over your eardrums, you’ll forget what soreness even feels like. It’ll be blissful, but just remember, that angelic chorus that you hear, it’s actually in the song.

Favorite Line: “I’m the kind of G that little homies wanna’ be, like on my knees in the night sayin’ prayers in the street light.”

Electronic

Song: “D.A.N.C.E.” by Justice

Why it’s Great: Whether you are actually dancing or just pumping along to the beat, Justice’s most well known song will be sure to take your mind of the fact that you are sweaty…so very sweaty. For the EDM veteran and the first time listener alike, these pop-infused vocals and groovy rhythms will be sure to stick in your head long after you’ve left the gym.

Favorite Line: “As strong as you might, working day and night, whatever happens, Do the DANCE! Do the DANCE!”
