When Healthy Foods Become Unhealthy: Healthy eating offers are a handful of health benefits that can greatly improve your quality of life. While it may sometimes feel like a chore, eating healthy can help boost productivity, mood, and general well being.

But just how much of these healthy foods should you eat? Well, eating too much of anything can be harmful to one’s health; regardless of the amount of nutrients it has to offer. Here are five healthy foods that are harmful if eaten too much:

when healthy foods become unhealthy

When Healthy Foods Become Unhealthy: Tuna

Tuna is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lower the risk of heart disease. However, tuna also contains high levels of mercury, which can cause problems with vision, hearing, speech, and coordination. It is recommended consumers limit their tuna intake to three to five servings a week to avoid mercury poisoning. Salmon and shrimp are great alternatives that contain safer levels of mercury.

When Healthy Foods Become Unhealthy: Spinach

Spinach can be considered a superfood, as it is a great source of vitamins and minerals, while also boasting a generous serving of protein and fiber. So what’s not to love? Well, spinach also contains oxalate, a compound that can contribute to the formation of kidney stones. This doesn’t mean you should cut spinach out of your diet altogether, but rather regulate your consumption to avoid the sometimes-painful passing of kidney stones.

When Healthy Foods Become Unhealthy: Water

Okay, we know what you’re thinking. “How can water possibly be bad for me? Our bodies are made up of mostly water.” While this is true, there is such a thing as water intoxication. Excessive water intake can lower blood sodium levels in the body, which can result in impaired brain function and death. Professionals recommend that everyone drink roughly eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to keep your body properly hydrated.

When Healthy Foods Become Unhealthy: Oranges and Tomatoes

Fruit and vegetables: natures gift to us. While these two food groups are a key contributor to healthy living, too much may cause some digestive problems. Oranges and tomatoes are very acidic, which can lead to acid reflux, a condition characterized by a burning sensation in one’s abdomen. Too much of these can cause Barrett’s Esophagus, a condition that develops precancerous lesions. To regulate your consumption, eat no more than two servings a day of tomatoes or oranges.

When Healthy Foods Become Unhealthy: Soy

Soy is often marketed as the greatest alternative to dairy and meat consumption. While soy does help regulate cholesterol levels and blood pressure, excessive consumption can cause iron-deficiency anemia. There is currently not enough evidence to say just exactly how much soy is safe, however limiting yourself to one to two servings a day is a safe bet.
