How to Help Herniated Discs

A herniated disc, caused by the soft center of a spinal disc pushing through a crack in the exterior casing, is one of the most common causes of back and leg pain. Although common, herniated discs, also known as slipped discs, can be one of the most painful injuries one can experience. However, not every case of a herniated disc needs medical attention. Here are some ways you can treat a herniated disc at home. Keep in mind, I am not a licensed medical professional, these are simply just tips. If your symptoms are severe and especially if you are pregnant, seek medical attention immediately.

Exercise

Getting proper exercise is important for anyone, but for those suffering with a herniated disc, exercise is crucial. Doing light cardio for 30 minutes each day can help ease pain associated with a herniated disc, and will also help improve your overall mood. During this time, also make sure you are eating a nutrient-rich diet and aren’t doing anything that can damage your health even further, like smoking cigarettes. Incorporating healthy efforts into your everyday life can also help prevent herniated discs from happening again in the future. Make sure you check with your physician before doing any exercises for herniated discs, as they can help you come up with a workout routine that will ease your herniated disc without causing more pain.

 

Use a Heating Pad

Heating pads are universally a good thing to have, and they can also be used to treat herniated discs. Heat helps to increase blood flow and can reduce pain and soothe sore muscles. Simply place a heating pad on the sore area for 20-30 minutes, and you should feel the pain lessen after a while. You can repeat this step every 2 to 3 hours, or until the affected area feels better.

 

Stretching

As I mentioned earlier, exercise can be a great way to alleviate pain associated with a herniated disc. Stretching, in particular, can be really beneficial to your recovery, as it is easy and doesn’t put a strain on your muscles. Yoga can also be helpful in trying to ease herniated disc pain, as well as walking and swimming. With your doctor’s permission, some light stretching of the muscles can really make a difference in your recovery.

 

Know When to Get Help

If your symptoms are severe, such as numbness in certain areas of your body or loss of motor skills, seek out medical attention right away. If a herniated disk is left untreated it will eventually get worse, and you may even experience partial paralysis or the inability to control bowel movements. It is important to identify these signs right away and get the proper medical attention you need.
