Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a buildup of abnormal cells that form a mass in part of the stomach. In the United States, there are approximately 25,500 new cases of stomach cancer each year. It represents 2 percent of all new cancers diagnosed in the country. The majority of people diagnosed with stomach cancer either already have metastasis or eventually develop it. Metastasis occurs when the cancer spreads from the area in which it first developed.
