Oily skin is due to the sebaceous glands producing more oil than necessary. Although oily skin is good for your skin in the long run, oily skin ages better than dry skin, the breakouts and oily look can be annoying. If you are a teen or adult who is prone to oily skin and breakouts, here are some things to know about oily skin.
Oily skin can be caused by hormones, humidity, heat, and excessive scrubbing or washing. The body naturally produces oil but if you strip the skin of all oil by washing too frequently, the body overcompensates by producing more. You may notice a change in your skin with the changes in weather. Summer brings oily skin while the skin seems to dry out in the winter months. Sun tanning is bad for oily skin. It may seem to dry it out temporarily but it actually triggers an injury response by the skin. This causes the glands to overproduce oil. Oily skin can also be genetic. When it runs in the family, chances are every member will have larger sebaceous glands.
